Nebraska Life Magazine
Since moving to Brookdale nearly a year ago, we have reduced our number of Magazine subscriptions, particularly those related to Agriculture since I was able to deduct their cost on income tax because of my activities. We made a decision today to not renew our Smithsonian Magazine after at least 15 years.. As I went through the July-August issue this evening for the 3rdtime, I couldn't find an article that challenged me to read. I suggest to Elaine that she take it out to the vestibule where people read what is available. Then I picked up the July-August, Nebraska Life. We have received it since it's beginning several years ago when they did a story on our Cattle Bank coffee group. It has an entirely different approach than Smithsonian.
The photography, layout, writing and items of interest are all outstanding; even the ads. The page I copied includes part of Lincoln's Sunken Gardens which is one of its Feature articles in addition to The Oregon Trail, Hopes and Dreams, Swan Lakes, and Sandhills Open Road Challenge. The ads copied also include Moostash Joe Tours and Explore Seward County. We have special interest in both as well as reading about the Sandhills Skidbarns and Museum of Nebraska Art in Kearney. The Sunken Gardens feature tells of its being developed during the WPA days when it was converted from an eyesore to one of the Cities beauty spots. I can remember when this change took place and it continues with the help of many volunteers. As recently as this past Monday, we admired it in driving past and would like to have stopped.
The picture on the front cover is the 1st place winner of the Magazine's Showcase Shots-Great Photos of the Good Life. This issues featured imagery of fireworks in Nebraska skies and the 2nd, 3rdand 4th place shots were also shown.. Prizes are awarded and the next issue will feature pictures showing the beauty, hard work and emotion of harvest.
